Story by Rob Frye

Saturday's tournament started off as a wet and cold morning with the sunshine to break out in the early afternoon. Water temps were pretty stable around 48 to 50 degrees. Lots of stories of most of the bites coming off of jigs and silver buddies. The other early Spring bait such as jerk baits, crankbaits and spinnerbaits were not as productive.

My son, Joshua caught a nice 2.39 lb largemouth on a senko in the early AM. That was the only fish in the boat for a few hours (and he let me know it ). I wasn't able to get anything started until after my 6 year old son had me bring him to the campground ramp so he could use the facilities. So I started to fish in the canal at the ramp and was able to catch my first bass about 10:00. After that, the sun came out and I was able to find about 20 bass on my black/blue/purple jig using a black/blue spidergrub as the jig trailer.

Congrats to Marc Hamel taking a commanding win at Big Island Pond at the April 28th Bubba Bassin Draw tournament. Marc was able to make it to first place on the leader board from a list of 62 anglers by catching the majority of his fish on his own jigs and spinnerbaits. Marc makes his own custom baits (who he is also going to sponsor Bubba Bassin with free give-aways) and has fished Big Island numberous times and knows what the bass like there. We also want to congratulate Marc (and his wife) on a new baby coming soon. Marc mentioned that when the sun came out he could key in on the better ambush points by targeting the shady side's of cover. Mark had the right jig that caught the tournament winning weight of 7.15 lbs for two fish includding our largemouth lunker that tipped the scales at 4.28 lbs.

Second place went to our winner of our previous Bubba Bassin Draw tournament on Massabessic. John Diaco flipped and
pitched his jig to about a dozen largies that were willing to bite. His hard work earned him 5.31 lbs at the scale.

Third place went to a new-comer to Bubba Bassin Club/Draw trail, Mike Sweeney. Mike had 2 nice largemouth that weighed in at 5.26 lbs. Mike also caught his bass on jigs in 2 to 8 feet of water, including a few bites in much shallow cover.

Lunker Smallmouth went to John Richardson with a fat 3.32 lb smallie. It must have been the new Skeeter Bass boat that helped John land that beauty. Congrats on the catch and the new toy for you and Ryan. We enjoy seeing you guys at the events.

First Loser's Pool went to Greg Saulnier (who won our Free Entry at the Massy T). Greg had 4.87 lbs for his two largemouth.

I also want to say congrats to our Free Entry give-away to "someone", but I can't remember at this time (so can someone throw me a bone and remind me (us))

Our next Bubba Bassin Draw tournament is scheduled for June 2nd on Shirley Resevoir in Shirley, MA. This is also scheduled during the Free Fishing weekend in Massachusetts so no fishing license is required.

Thanks to our Tournament Directors and volunteers (which reminds me, TD's please make sure I can get a pic of you next time we meet to update the homepage).
