Peter Weeks schools us in the art of drop-shotting on Squam's Midweek

This week our Midweek starts out on Golden pond where old friends gather. We were welcomed by a very brisk morning and a stunning sunrise. As the day goes on, our resident pro, Peter Weeks, Peter (Skeet) Weeks schools us in the art of drop shotting. A technique that brought him back to our winner’s circle.

Peter took first with 15.37 anchored with a huge toad at 5.89. And yes this was our lunker largemouth. Peter talked to having that limit very early using his drop shot rig. When Peter talks early that is 5 fish in the boat by 8am, Keep in mind we have a 7 am start time. Using his trusty drop shot, rigged with Seaguar Line, Peter talks that this is the best fluorocarbon on the market. That is the pro’s tip of the day. Now that we know he had his limit so early, I need to talk to you a little about a story. I got a call from Peter the night before telling me he wasn’t sure he was going to show up because, I quote “I got nothing on that lake” . Well I guess he has something going on because he was able to find five smallies quickly using his drop shot rigged with Seaguar InvizX. As Peter shared this fluorocarbon is super super sensitive, so sensitive you can feel those fishes breathing. So with all that I guess Peter’s moment the night before on the phone with me will go down in history as a giant sandbagging chat. We do know he is a sandbagger, So Peter takes off in his Skeeter machine in search of some stuff. He changed his technique a little bit later in the day and went over to the dark side of flipping and goes to the docks to cull out two of his smallmouth to capture one very impressive largemouth and a very respectable second one. Congratulations Peter on a great win on Squam.

Coming in second place was Mike Vining, this young man is on a role, He wins a few with us, joins USA BASSIN on Sunday and takes a win there as well. How many has he won with us? I don’t know, I have lost count. What an outstanding year this has been. This young man is definitely targeting those big green fish. As Mike comes by me in the morning, I give him a check and off he goes on his silver stallion galloping straight to a series of docks and begins his day by flipping a one ounce (huge) black and blue jig with a crawfish imitation that is just huge. Mike talks to only five bites and that gave him second place with 14.31 anchored by a 4.56 largemouth. Well done.

Coming in third my long time friend, Dick Raymond. Finally coming out of retirement, I am teasing about the retirement, he has been busy with his business and other commitments, Dick definitely enjoys Squam, I have had many opportunities to fish with him here and he does know the lake well. Dick starts his day off in that secret place we are not allowed to speak of, with a sliver and white spook. That brisk morning we all had was a heart pumper for Dick because a very large green fish smacks the snot out of that spook. That fish came to the scales weighing in at 5.73 just missing that lunker money but anchoring his winning bag of 13.81. Dick was still pretty proud and pleased with himself because that third place spot kept him in the green, money green that is. It was good to see you Dick and hope to see you at more this season.


Coming in fourth, Tom Lamb. Tom talks to having that limit at 10 am. Tom strictly threw spider grubs all day long. Concentrating on those smalles he ended his day with 12.29 anchored by a 2.29 smallface. Good job Tom. Way to catch them all

Fifth place winner, Cory Nearing came to the scales with 12.17 anchored by our lunker smallface with 3.38. Cory – give Pete (Skeet) Weeks a call. I know you are a tried and true drop shotter but I think that his tip above could be helpful. Well lets not forget a Pro’s endorsement of this Seaguar InvisiX is impressive in itself. Coming in sixth place was Steve Graham. AS Steve shared at the end of the day, don’t you want my story?? I said absolutely. His statement was and I quote, “I threw the kitchen sink at them”. We had a couple of laughs over that. But really, Steve had his limit very early. He went to that secret spot and caught green fish to go off in search of the biggins. Steve threw his Steve’s perfect jig at docks and wood throughout the day to come back to Little Squam near the end of the day to find the top water bite. With the sun high and the breeze warm he managed to cullup a smallface for one of those green fish weighing in at 3.10 complimenting that 12.06 bag. Congratulations out to Steve and Matt Dupree for the win at Winnisquam with Northern Bass and locking in for the Northern Bass TOC . congrats.

Taking our coveted first loser pool, no stranger to the first loser pool, Gary Croteau. He keeps it simple, he throws that jig, throws that jig and throws that jig. Gary came to the scale with 12 pounds even with 5 fish. He made us laugh at the photo op as he shared he is no stranger to the posture he needs to take at the photo, the tell tale sign of the Big L. Congratulations Gary.
