With the threat of thunderstorms all night, a few brave anglers came to play for the night on Winnipesaukee on July 24th.

Story by Reggie Goulet

The sky was cloudy and the weather was warm as 8 boats took off from West Alton Bay Marina.  Marc Hamel and Reggie headed towards Moultonborough followed by Dave Pfieffer and Eric Lally.  The rest of the pack took off in different directions.  Marc and Reggie hit their first spot and the first keeper came to the boat for Reggie.  It looked like a good sign.  The next few hours were spent in a cove where the bites were sporadic, but a few more keepers came to the boat.  Around 2 am in the morning, Marc and Reggie headed in to Lees Mills area.  Again, just a few sporadic bites and some short fish were caught.  Then it came.  The sky turned black and the rains came down hard and fast.  Marc decided to go back to a spot where he had lost what felt like a huge fish, while Reggie decided to sit it out and take a nap.  All of a sudden Marc woke Reggie up and called for the net.  He figured he had the fish from earlier.  It may have been a different one, but it didn’t matter.  After what seemed like an eternity of line and drag running, they saw the head come up toward the boat.  It was a toad!!  Reggie got the net under it and Marc landed a nice 6.73 lbr.  It was enough to lock him in to a second place spot to cash a check.  The rest of the night was slow and a few more fish hit but just weren’t hooking up.

Meanwhile, Joe Spinello was on the opposite end of the lake fishing in Paugus Bay.  He reported that he was able to land about 20 keepers, which landed him the winning bag at 14.66 lbs.  He was the only angler to bring in a limit.  Joe says he spent most of the night fishing a buzz bait around and in between docks.  Joe has now cashed himself a check at the last 2 tournaments.

At the weigh-in, the sky cleared up and allowed us to have a dry time at the scales.  The anglers that were left all told of the stories of just a few bites and missed fish.  It seemed like a tough tourney for most, except for Mr. Spinello.  Ryan Nutting also brought himself in a check cashing bag for first losers pool.  Congrats to the winners and thanks to all who came out to brave the storms.
